Red Hippo

'Deceptively intelligent...'

Red Hippo is a stunning mix of sousaphone, Irish whistles, saxophones and strings, exploring a musical world influenced by traditional folk music with jazz influenced arrangements. Coming from previous incarnations in jazz, ska and folk bands these three excellent musicians create an exciting clash of sound that appeals across the board - their style means they are not restricted by genre and have appeared at folk, world and jazz festivals.
They’ve successfully integrated a melange of styles, and they’re masters of all: folk/roots,  jazz and steam hammer, bass-heavy brass delivered via a thumping, rhythmic sousaphone.
However, these genres are not simply ‘bolted on’ in a lowest common denominator, catch-all manner. The differing styles are inter-woven into a unique musical form. Red Hippo’s music is deceptively intelligent, yet utterly accessible, delivered with wit...
Their mission is to explore the world musically and create a sound that mixes their version of traditional tunes with originals: wonderful melodies underpinned by a few “posh chords.”
Memorable in sound, appearance and enthusiasm they have already been seen and heard at Towersey Festival, Sidmouth Folk Week, Beverley Folk Festival, Marsden Jazz Festival and Whitby's Musicport Festival.

What they're saying about Red Hippo:

"Red Hippo  engage an audience and with a  unique combination of instruments & personalities and  come up with a sound that is both  captivating and thoroughly inventive" Jim McLaughlin, Musicport Festival

“An entirely unique sound. O’Carolan will be swaying in his grave to the sounds of his tunes played on sousaphone!” Martin Green, LAU
“Music with enough charm to send tree blossom tumbling” Halifax Courier
“The band comprise three remarkable musicians playing a striking array of instruments which they use to produce a fusion of Celtic folk music heavily influenced by jazz." Morning Star
“Together they explore a musical world influenced by traditional English, Irish and Scandinavian folk melodies and original tunes often underpinned with, how they put it, “posh jazz chords”. Square Chapel, West Yorkshire
